Is it normal for a leading presidential contender to not even be invited to CPAC?

I mean, Mitt Romney is going to be there (this year, 2013, for the 4th or 5th year in a row), Jeb Bush is going to be there, John McCain has gone there too.

Yet they're still not even bothering to invite Christie.

These guys deserve to lose at this point. They are going to nominate loverboy no substance Marco Rubio and lose again and be all pissed off because their purity test didn't work AGAIN and basically the party keeps screwing up.

As Obama said in another context, they acted stupidly.

I don't even understand the argument against Christie. Do these people really think some joint Christie-Obama press conferences swung a bunch of voters in Ohio and Virginia? That doesn't even make any sense.

There's a chance I'll be attending CPAC this year, so I'll need advice from you guys on who to vote for to try and make it even more of a joke than it already is. I only want to go to see Governor Romney.

Vote Rick Santorum. I want his hopes up as much as possible.

We all know how this ends...

Christie declares candidacy.

Conservatives freak out and try in vain to find a suitable alternative.

Like ten conservatives declare candidacy.

Conservative candidates proceed to attack each other. Christie looks bemused.

Christie wins most of the early primaries with pluralities because the conservative vote is split among so many candidates.

Conservative candidates run out of money and drop out.

Conservative pundits try to make themselves feel better and keep telling themselves that Christie is the best hope they have of beating Hillary.

What would be really funny to see is a repeat of Romney's nomination with the steady meager support while horrible wingnuts surge and self-destruct until there's nothing they can do. But I'd rather see them split I think.

I am no longer a Republican and don't consider myself to be a right winger- but I can't STAND Chris Christie...it doesn't have to do with his views, but the way he expresses them... yelling and calling people idiots does not work anywhere in politics and for some one aspiring to be President of the United States, his behavior is particularly shameful. Honesty is a trait I look for in politicians- but there is a difference between being honest and being rudely blunt. I'm surprised his "tough guy" routine hasn't turned people off long before this...

Good for you, CPAC!

That's Jersey, it's not an act. There are a ton of Chris Christies all over the place. Yeah, he's a douche, but that doesn't really bother us as long as he's getting his job done. Oh, and also, I don't know that I've ever seen him yell, I think people just think of his talking as yelling. You know when someone from New Jersey is yelling.

What a disaster the Republican leadership is.

CPAC has nothing to do with Republican leadership.  That being said, Christie certainly isn't a conservative, but if I were in the ACU, I'd have invited him.  Sadly, Al Cardenas hasn't been as good of a chair for ACU as David Keene was.  David Keene allowed GOProud to be a sponsor.  Cardenas came in and put a stop to that.  So this isn't all that surprising.

Those in charge are still "leaders" in the party. You don't have to be McConnell/Boehner/Priebus/etc. to hold influence; it's a broad term.

I mean, is Romney a conservative? It's a Republican event, and they should be inviting one of their frontrunners (and their strongest horse in a general election at the moment). Refusing Christie a spot plays a whole lot worse optically than biting the bullet and inviting a "moderate" (and the fact that CC is considered moderate these days says all that's need to be said about where the GOP is on the spectrum right now).

Honestly, it's not a "Republican event".  I'm willing to bet that if you ask most Republicans who Al Cardenas and David Keene are, they wouldn't have a clue.  Many/most people there are probably Republicans, but that doesn't make it a Republican event any more than an NRA meeting is a Republican event.

Precisely, and I doubt this sells well in the rest of the country. I remember when I went away to college in the East - I thought, 'my god, what is wrong with these people, they're awful!'  Like an entire region devoid of basic tact and reserve; also hirsute and swarthy - I'd never seen such a frightful and unnatural predominance of brunettes in my life.

But he will be invited to a CPAP convention, so all is well.
