Tomorrow, he publicly and eloquently states his support for same-sex marriage.  Considering the entire context and everything that he has said so far, how would people view Mittens?

It would not change my view of him one bit because there would be absolutely no guarantee he wouldn't go back to opposing it on Wednesday.

Being opposed to same-sex marriage is one of those things Romney actually believes in. Switching his position on the issue now, just a few months later, would look terrible. It'd also make the GOP look bad, stirring up controversy about the party being terrified to stick up to its out-of-control ultra-conservative base.

Good point.

I also agree with the other posters.  It's ironic that supporting SSM, while the right thing for someone to do, would make Mittens look absolutely pathetic, even more so than he already does.  He should not do the right thing.  He should just enjoy his private life of luxury, which I'm sure he will.

Like he's trying to imitate Harry Reid, the only other high-profile Mormon to support same-sex marriage.

I really don't think anyone believes what he said during the election campaign to be true, and most just view it as the guy saying what he needed to in order to secure the nomination, so no one would be surprised if he came out in support of it, and I anticipate it would be a welcomed move.

No, he should do the right thing - enjoy his private life in quietude, making no future political pronouncements, but giving away 90%+ of his fortune to noble causes before. Maybe the Greek treasury. Tongue

"I'm Mitt Romney, and I support common-sense solutions for America that will improve citizens' lives, free up the private sector to create wealth and jobs, and get this country and this economy back on track. And one of those common-sense solutions is to make sure that all Americans who want to marry and make a commitment to the individual he or she loves, and wants to start a family, are able to do so. Families are the building blocks of our society and they are what strengthens our social fabric. And that's why I'm proud to support marriage for all couples.

...

...there, I said it. You think now I'll get to be president in four years? What did we do with all the left over PAC money? Is it still in that Swiss bank that doesn't report to the IRS?"

"Um, Mr. Romney, the camera is still on."

"It is? Well, gosh, just be sure to edit that last part out."

"This is live, sir."

"#$%&!!!"

He's going to have to start looking after the people he laid off and lives he ruined before he can even start to think about making peace with humanity by announcing his support for equal rights.

The moment he'd say it I would be asking myself, "Alright, which of his sons came out to him?" Romney would just be another Rob Portman to me. If he ever did support same-sex marriage, it would be for his families selfish needs before ever caring about the actual nation.

Two things:

1. Your signature made me viscerally ill
2. Why put Romney in the same category as Rob Portman? And why does it matter which influential Republican(s) come out to endorse gay marriage? They're going to influence people no matter what, so...

He'd say that Romney is a brave American who is just showing how much he loves each American for who they are. And then he'd speculate another Romney Presidential run.
