Bushie, as long as you're open to answering questions now, let me ask something I think I asked a while back but never got an answer on: You had mentioned your dad mowing the lawn.  Since your dad works, and you're living off of your parents rent free, are you doing any chores around the house to pitch in?  Why don't you mow the lawn rather than your dad for example?

I am doing the dishes after most meals.  I am taking out the trash, checking the mail, doing my own laundry, and keeping the house straightened up.  I also am helping Dad in the yard when needed.  He has still been mowing, but I will be taking care of that the next time it needs to be done.  I am also going to get out there and finish picking up the leaves that the recent flood left behind.  Granted, I'm not doing as much as I should, but I am trying to do something.

Yet you've left rotting fruit around for a day, acknowledging that you have nothing important to do, and you still don't throw it out.

So, what?  There is no need for you to micromanage every detail of my life and pester me with every petty thing I do.  Seriously, it is getting annoying.

You should have a 31 minute break to symbolize your new age.

A little programming note:  On Sunday, 28 April 2013 at 23:45 CDT, Update VI will close.  On Monday, 29 April 2013 at 00:15 CDT, Update VII will open.  It will be the beginning of a new year in the main character's life.

What's with the arbitrary new starting time for Update VII?  And why is the update thread taking a 30 minute break?

My birthday is Monday and I want to get a clean start.  As far as the 30 minute break, do I have to have a reason?

If you don't want to seem crazy, yes.

I've seen "the writers" referenced before, and thought, what? This is a fiction, but who would type out a fiction like this on an Internet forum? It's not like it's a comic book or anything. Then I thought maybe it was some obscure reference to God or something, but the plural makes no sense. Ah well.

You guys are so right - in a godforsaken place like Kenya there is no baseball all day, no watching movies all night, no eating like he does now. You're lucky to have clean water. There are bugs, it's hot. Missionary work is grueling from what I have heard, and what I did hear was years ago when I was a kid.

The ideal job for Bushie would be to be a minister. It's really not taxing work in the least, especially for a country minister, and even if you have to perform weddings and funerals, you're still the boss. Other people do the heavy-lifting. Bushie could watch TV all day, read his Bible, and prepare sermons. Why wouldn't he want to do that?

you don't know any ministers, do you?

Aside from what shua said (and the "not taxing work in the least" comment belongs in the Deluge) you must also consider that Bushie is
a morbidly obese unemployed man who lives in his parents house and passes the time watching television, consuming junk food, soda, and pornography, and posting the inane details of his his life on the internet

He's not particularly charismatic or inspiring in the slightest.

I have. It's not taxing work. Well, compared to a lot of other things, let me put it that way.

It does require a degree of motivation, though, because you have cull together thoughts and be a little organized. But if one cannot find the motivation for what is obviously an interest (Bible, missionary, etc.), there is literally no point, then, to any of this. I don't think he's going to lose weight, so talking about that is pointless. Being a minister is WELL within his reach, though.

I agree with PGH. He should get into something or try to become a minister instead of going to Kenya, where he is physically unable to live. He should also not spend even more money to get a CAD degree that he will likely never use. I still have never seen the logic of him going back to school if he really wants to go to Kenya anyway. It just seems like another "vacation" for him and avoid real life for another year or so while he takes classes.

I am sure there is a church somewhere in Oklahoma where he could lead a congregation.

I wonder if Bushie posting his full name and entire life (well his version of it) on the internet has any impact on his employment status. One would have to assume so.

Inks should be able to confirm, but I just walked nearly 30 minutes and logged 1.50 miles.  I had to get my medicine in Shawnee, so I just went to the Shawnee Mall and walked.

BRTD mentions a few important points - although I'm disappointed that I left "pathological liar" out of that quote - but I'd also highlight the importance of empathy and self-control to ministry. The best pastors are those who fill a wide variety of roles - mentor, friend, community organizer, counselor, etc - that involve putting others before oneself. Raving about the apocalypse and shaming gay relatives based on one's patchy knowledge of scripture does not qualify anyone to serve as a religious leader.

That said, becoming a minister would be a noble, plausible goal for Bushie in many ways. But he needs to pull himself together first.

The only way he will ever pull himself together is first recognizing there is a problem. At this moment, he has convinced himself that his life is in a mess only because he is God's chosen one, likening himself to Moses and Paul.

I don't think Bushie is cutout to be a minister, but maybe he can find work for a charity.

Actually, right now, I am the Assistant Pastor at my church.  That's not a joke, either.  I knew I was called to preach way back in 1988, when I was only 6 years old.  If I cannot go to Kenya for whatever reason, I will probably be preaching and leading a congregation somewhere.

I've thought about it, and I tested the app, by setting it to running and then getting in my car.  It started going as fast as the car was moving.

Doing what exactly? Loving on children? Charity jobs are mostly about fundraising, including organizing community events and benefits, raising public awareness of their specific cause despite a deafening onslought of competition for the public's attention, and being clever about doing the most good with the funds they have, including knowing when and when not to spend some of those funds, in hopes of getting a financial return on their investment. Does any of that sound like Bushie?

Bushie may not be inspirational or charismatic (though we don't know him in real life but we can make an educated guess lol), but he seems to be able to manipulate people. He could be an ok minister. He should really try that out before spending money on CAD.

Sbane is right, I am definitely not charismatic.  In fact, I have heard it said of me that roots grow under my feet when I preach.  I stay right at the pulpit and don't even move from one side of the pulpit to the other.  The main reason is my church is so small that we have no need for a lapel mic.  We just use the pulpit mic or the two other mics if we're purposely standing away from the pulpit.

I don't have to be charismatic, though.  The worshipers are not coming to hear me, they are coming to hear God.  Every time I preach, or every time I pray right before my Pastor Cousin preaches, I ask God to "hide him behind the cross so that all the congregation may see is You."  The messages are not about the men behind the pulpit, they are about God speaking to the worshipers through the mouth of the preacher.  We also are very careful to say during every sermon to not take our words for it, but to measure everything against the Word of God and if there are discrepancies, always believe the Bible, not us, and to approach us and let us know we were wrong.  We are definitely open to being corrected, as we are just human ourselves and are far from infallible.
