It's shiny.  It's been use for money or to back money.  It even has some practical uses though very little is used for anything practical.  If you had bought it when GW Bush was inaugurated it's value would have tripled by the time Obama was inaugurated.  After Obama was inaugurated it's value even doubled again for awhile, but it's fallen from a high of $1900 to $1430 overseas this morning, including a drop of almost 10% since Thursday.  What's it all mean?  Does it even mean anything or is it all, as the kids say, hoakum?

The stock market is up 11% so far this year. These things tend to be anti-correlated.

Well, CNBC sort of says it's because it is perceived that Europe is finally getting its fiscal act together. YMMV.

We had a bit of a gold mania for a while. It's on the way back down now. Markets are not any more rational than the people doing the buying and selling. There's not much to say beyond that. I don't care much for predictions. The people who make them are usually wrong. If they had any magical insight, they wouldn't be wasting their time in the professional prediction game.
