Not sure I get it. Do Kiwi birds have some same-sex sexual behaviour?

Can't say I'm surprised. Isn't New Zealand the most socially liberal country in the Anglosphere?

Firstly, well done New Zealand!

Secondly, I like that in a story about NZ Australia still gets a couple of mentions. Roll Eyes

Thirdly, it looks like there's a bit of a head of steam at the moment, which is great, but I can't see it really affecting too many countries other than the ones already in the process of making it legal in the near term.

Great atmosphere; a song after it passed and some stonking good speeches.

I think Canada is more socially liberal, but New Zealand is comparable and probably was more socially liberal historically. Canada > New Zealand > UK > Australia > US.

Well, NZ was the first country in the world to elect a transgender person to parliament.

New Zealand also has legalised prostitution, a drinking age of 18 and an age of consent of 16. Economic policies are also pretty libertarian, with a comparatively simple tax system, almost no tariffs and in general few silly regulations (except surrounding land use).

I'd say New Zealand has the best policy bundle in the world. The main downsides are the relatively low wages for the cost of living (especially housing).

Canada has a age of consent of 16, a drinking age of 18/19 (depends of the province) and prostitution is illegal, for now (but the law banning was stuck down by a low level court, government appealed, and it will go like that until it reaches the Supreme Court, which is very socially liberal, so, we never know...)

16 is the the most common age of consent in the US. It's not a particularly radical thing.

I've been away for a few days so haven't had a chance to comment until now.

I'm so proud of New Zealand for the way this has been handled. There were some brilliant speeches from both sides of the house...especially from Maurice Williamson who used his sense of humour to impart a powerful message of tolerance.

There have been outcries from the usual religious sources but by and large the general public has merely shrugged and moved on...as Williamson said "the sun did rise the next day"

Let's hope our ANZAC cousins follow soon.

NZ is such a better place than France...
