Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Wait, isn't that a synonym for "being soundly defeated"? That's what the phrase means in French.

^Many would interpret it as "hopefully she dies"

I understood that that wasn't what you intended, because I know you well enough, but yeah, that's what it means in English.

Anyway, I'm by instinct inclined to support Hanabusa for various reasons, but Schatz is a better candidate by most objective measurements, so I probably won't get too invested in this.

Good to see I still have things to learn about the English language. Wink

(and I'd rather have an incident like this happen here than in a RL conversation!)

Inouye is not a god.

I am a Schatz supporter. Hanabusa reminds me of Ro Khanna in California, believing that she is entitled to the seat. Schatz has more potential than Hanabusa ever will.

This whole race is gonna be full of some really bad race baiting.. I really shiver to think how nasty it will get in regards to nativist appeals.

Hanabusa is a member of the largest racial group and second-largest ethnic group in Hawaii and was born in Waianae. I don't think that would work on either side.

Good. I was worried about her weak fundraising quarter, but now that she's actually in, things should pick up and this will help.

But why support her over Schatz?

Eh.. I like Hanabusa and think she should've gotten that Senate seat, but I would've much preferred her to go for the Governorship.

Urgh.

Very harsh on Schatz. Just reeks of bitterness, and it'll just create an unnecessary diversion.

Terrible is she wins. Hawaii is shooting itself in the foot with regards to seniority.

Schatz has my full support.

Why do you want Hawaii to have so much seniority over Virginia? As a Californian, I want Hawaii to have less seniority...

Schatz' appointment doesn't give him a God-given right to the seat. Hanabusa is an ambitious politician. She wants to be in the Senate. Now is her chance to do it. There is nothing wrong with challenging an appointed senator who is aligned politically with a governor that she doesn't agree with especially when there is no danger the seat will go GOP.

I don't know whether I would vote for Schatz or Hanabusa in a primary. But the outrage against Hanabusa is a little much. Plus for those worried about seniority, now there's an opportunity to elect someone young to the house.

It seems that Hanabusa will probably win. If Schatz is smart, he may consider a switcheroo if polling bears out that he would lose the primary.

Why should people in other states want Hawaii's Senators to have more potential seniority, the main effect of which would be redistribute a larger share of the pork pie away from their states to Hawaii?

Why not just recruit moderately talented 30 year old women with a family history of longevity and unwillingness to retire?

Seniority isn't a qualifying thing to be a Senator. Legitimate senior senator from Hawaii will be Senator Hirono.

And it can all be blamed on that useless lump Abercrombie appointing his right hand man as a political play.

Endorsed.

But I want a funny named Senator to be there, especially since Mike Crapo is probably going to go down in a firey primary after his drunk driving or not even run. I endorse Brian Schatz!

What's wrong with Hanabusa going for this seat? Does Shatz have some sort of god given right to that seat just because he was appointed by the governor? I wonder why there is all this outrage....hmm.

Umm, didn't Ro Khanna patiently wait for stark to retire and not take him on directly? See where that got him. He will likely lose to Honda. His best chance was to defeat Stark, which he should have been able to do.

Of course I don't follow Hawaii politics very closely, but it looks Abercrombie just paid off one of his loyalists. Of course that is how politics works, but I can see why someone like Hanabusa, who has ran for federal office before, would be bitter. Why should Shatz be entitled to that seat? He hasn't actually won an election for it. Why not let the people decide who is better? I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yeah Risch is the one this year, but still, no way Crapo survives in 2016, so might as well be safe and keep Schatz.
