Overall? By party? For states with strong partisan advantages or disadvantages? (That is, are there some states with large Republican legislative majorities than nonetheless have relatively inept Republican parties? Are there states with large Democratic legislative majorities than nonetheless have comparatively well-organised Republican parties?)

The New York Republicans have to be one of the worst, although the NY Dems arent so hot either, looking at the fiasco in the state senate.

The California Republicans are probably the worst, with the Vermont Dems seeming to be the most effective.

The North Carolina Republican bench has one guy on it who can actually win statewide. Pretty bad.

Actually, we have four Republicans who won state races last year Tongue

But, yeah, McCrory has a loyal base, most of which don't realize how extreme he really is.

I actually think the LA Dems have done decently well, considering having Obama as the face of the party.

I'd nominate South Carolina Democrats, because of this:

Worst: SC Democratic Party, NJ Democratic Party, AR Republican Party (despite the state's conservative trend)

Best: CA Democratic Party, VA Democratic Party

I think the rise of the AR Republicans has more to do with the ineptness of the Democrats, independent of the state's trend.

Virginia Dems, really? Same Dems who have no choice but to nominate Terry McAuliffe for a very winnable governors race?

I'd have to agree with AngryGreatness. The NHGOP is in pretty awful shape right now. 3/4 majority to the minority party, nominating the Speaker responsible to NH-2, and nominating a painfully obvious carpetbagger to take on Shaheen.

For worst Democratic party I'd have to say Arkansas.

Virginia Dems, really? Same Dems who have no choice but to nominate Terry McAuliffe for a very winnable governors race?

In 2008, they managed to turn a state that hadn't gone Dem since 1964 into a lean-Dem swing state, with both Senate seats to boot, and they did it again in 2012.  I think that's a significant accomplishment.
