The difference between the marijuana debate in the US and Europe is marked. In the US legalisation has topped polls for quite some time, due to the well-funded organisations in favour and the very visible effects of the drug war sparking backash. In Europe - even in supposed left-wing paradise lands - legalisation remains a very niche nonstarter. The few parties that support it are widely avoided - look at NEOS in Austria being dragged into supporting it, then collapsing in the polls. I think "Ming" Flanegan got a free vote in the Irish Dail about marijuana legalisation and got like 4 votes in favour.

It's not often I say this about any election, but who cares? The Swiss have an interesting system, but really make it boring from an electoral observers POV. Hmph. Angry

Referenda in Fenruary:

  • A Christian Democrat proposal to define  marriage as a union between a man and a woman
  • a SPP proposal to expel foreign crims. (this already is law, but SPP want to emphasis these crims will be pushed out really hard
  • A Young Socialist proposal to "end speculation on food"
  • A transport proposal about reconstructing the world's fourth largest tunnel

In June there are five proposed referenda, most interestingly about a Basic Income proposal that I assume stands no chance of passing (this is Switzerland, after all)

The Swiss referendum on expelling foreign criminals (and by criminals, it counts things like speeding) is using an old favourite poster:

Results in this Sunday. Lot of attention being paid to the BI which will almost certainly fail.
