Me and the rest of the training associates had a huge debate about this yesterday.

This should not be close. Basterds was a much more uneven movie.

Basterds is better in pretty much every way.

BRTD, I'm not going to vote in your poll, because I haven't seen them both, but I can't imagine Django Unchained being very good.  What an absolutely stupid premise.  I only post here because it's worth mentioning, and a little embarrassing, that I go excited when I first heard of the movie.  It was from one of your threads as well.  You made a Django Unchained thread, asking if we were going to see the movie.  You didn't describe the movie, and naturally I thought it was an historical fiction or autobiographical sketch of the only Django I'd ever heard of, Jazz guitar legend Django Reinhardt.  I mean, how many Django can there be, right?  I thought, "Cool, a movie about Django Reinhardt!  And since it's called Django Unchained it must be him in all his raw awesomeness.  I'm there!"  I may even have voted yes in your poll.  Can't remember.  Oh, imagine my disappointment upon reading the posts in that thread and learning that it was a poorly-conceived schlock western.

Ah, well, for what it's worth, Inglorious Bastards was a poorly-conceived schlock film as well, but I saw it and thought it was good for a few moments.  Will reserve my vote till such time as I've seen both, which will likely be never.

I'd like to know what films angus doesn't think are schlock (genuinely).

I liked Basterds more than Django easily, by the way. Django was still a very entertaining film, but it lacked something.. not to mention the silly plot holes. Then there was Tarantino himself trying to put on an Australian accent. Yikes. The entire theatre laughed out loud it was so awful.

I thought Inglorious Basterds had the better scenes, but Django was better overall.  On the whole, I think I've fallen off of the Tarantino train.

Hopefully the Coen Bros can still bring it.

And apropos of nothing, why the #@*!^ are the two movies on IFC tonight, City Slickers and Austin Powers in Goldmember?  and why am I paying for this?

Django Unchained was superior in just about ever facet of film-making, so I'll go with that one.

I've only seen Inglourious Basterds, and I thought it was just okay. There were parts I liked and others not so much. However, Christoph Waltz's performance was just excellent.

Inglorious Basterds was technically a better made film but I think I enjoyed myself a little bit more at Django Unchained.

Wizard of Oz, for one.  And anything from Pedro Almodóvar.  That's the good stuff.

But I got nothing against good schlock.  Pulp Fiction I really liked, and there are lots of Mel Brooks movies as well as some of the Monty Python movies are good.  Don't care for Austin Powers, though.

I think Inglourious Basterds is a great film with some amazing moments, but it was kind of unevenly paced and Brad Pitt was terrible.

Django Unchained was a better overall film, I would say.

Ditto. Though I appreciated Tarantino using parts of Elmer Bernstein's score from Zulu Dawn, because I have particular affection for that music.

Django was overall a stronger, more entertaining movie and Waltz was better as King Schultz than as Hans Landa. Maybe because it's easier to like a German bounty hunter who hates slavery than a Nazi Jew hunter.

I kind of figured Inglorious Basterds would win out on here. Surprising.

"Did you prefer Django Unchained or Inglourious Basterds?"

That is a "yes or no" question by the way it is phrased.

Since you meant to ask which one I prefered more, it was "Inglorious...".  "Django..." was funny, but it wasn't as interesting as a whole as "Inglorious...".

Basterds. It was a way tighter movie. Django could've ended about 45 minutes earlier than it did. And that stuff matters to me.

Both were too long, convoluted and absurd. I generally like my cartoon in nice digestible half hour doses.  I still havent even finished Django; so I guess Basterds by default.

haha.  I suppose.  You'd hear Lt. Raine say, "We're going to (pause) those Nazis up."  Or "Every one of you (pause) owes me a hundred scalps!"

It was intelligible, though, and still required much suspension of disbelief to appreciate.  On TNT, it ran from 8PM till 11:35PM last night.  I watched most of it.  Commercials were perfect.  Some of those channels don't do any, so I have to miss some when I refill my glass or pee, both of which I do often.  On some channels, there's a commercial every fifteen minutes, which is annoying.  On this one, they had them about every 30 minutes and they lasted maybe 2 minutes.  Perfect.

You can really see the influence of Sam Peckinpah in this film.  If I didn't know who directed it I would have guessed Sam Peckinpah.

I still find something odd in the title's spelling, and nothing in the movie quite explains it.
