Neither Pres. Johnson, VicePres. Humphrey, or Robert Kennedy runs. Robert Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson reach a compromise, for one, where they will both throw their support to Edward Kennedy. Remember, in real life, Teddy and L.B.J. were good friends and got along very well. Teddy said this in his autobiography, as did L.B.J. in his, that L.B.J. got along with Teddy in real life because the youngest Kennedy remained a hawk on U.S. intervention in Vietnam until Hamburger Hill and until Nixon became President in 1969. There are many books and interviews on the subject. Edward Kennedy wins nomination and approval by the Johnson Administration because he takes a center right position on the war during his campaign. Wallace decides to run in the Democratic primaries against Kennedy and not as an independent. He stays neutral during the campaign after he loses nomination. Edward Kennedy chooses Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore as his running-mate. Teddy wins nomination on the first ballot. Gore by acclamation. They face Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew in November. Skeptics have no fear Chappa and Mary Jo still happens. Stay tuned.

Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA)/Sen. Al Gore Sr. (D-TN): 401
Fmr. Vice Pres. Richard Nixon (R-NY)/Gov. Spiro Agnew (R-MD): 92
Fmr. Gov. George Wallace (I-AL)/Fmr. Gov. Marvin Griffin (I-GA): 45

Kennedy wins by a wide margin, simply due to his last name (and this is even if Chappaquiddick had happened before the election.)  After Kennedy wins the Dem nomination, Wallace drops out and runs as an Independent, selecting former Democrat Governor Marvin Griffin of Georgia as his running mate.
