Yes of course, it's a disgusting racial slur, just as the Cincinnati Bengals is offensive to tigers, the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos are offensive to horses, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is offensive to pirates, etc.

Also everything Oldiesfreak1854 has ever posted.

Yes, of course. It's a disgusting racial slur, it's a name explicitly picked because it was a disgusting racial slur, and it is representative of an ugly period of racism and segregation in American sport.
The worst part is in bold.

But in fairness to Lief, it was chosen by those evil racist Republicans, wasn't it?

Maybe actually learn about this before you go off sounding like an idiot, okay?

The Redskins used to be called the Braves. Then their unashamedly racist owner changed their name to the Redskins to appeal to racists. This should be simple enough for even a moron to understand.

Very true and thats why we made an Oldiesfreak thread to avoid this one from being filled up with his posts.

So I hope people will stop posting his stuff here.

as demonstrated by the fact that The Nation must be counting on morons to read their articles.  The name was changed to Redskins while they were still in Boston, 4 years before they moved to Washington.

It means the idea that he changed the name in order to appeal to racist Southerners is ahistorical nonsense.

That he was a racist is not.  Still, he probably changed it not because Redskins was more derogatory but because he moved the team from playing at Braves Field, the home of the Boston Braves of baseball to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.

The team name is racist, it was changed from a neutral name to a racist one, the man who changed it was racist and proud of it, and he marketed his racist team to racists. There's no way of proving what the guy's exact motives were, but it's pretty obvious.

The assertion that he chose the name to market it to Bostonians who hated American Indians is strange enough that it requires some sort of direct evidence.

It was more likely intended as a pun; Braves -> Braves, Red Sox -> Redskins

Nevertheless it's pretty clearly offensive nowadays and should probably be changed.

I'm not an expert on Native American history, but was it not racist back then? What if the Patriots changed their name to the New England N*****killers back in 1913?

It would be more like the New England Negroes (also, the Boston Patriots would not be founded for years to come).  It was a word that didn't have especially negative connotations back then, the most offensive would probably have been "Injun."  It's similar to Asians in that all the words used to describe them then would be considered offensive today ("Yellows," "Mongolians," "Chinamen...").

"Braves" was hardly a neutral name to begin with. Ernest is correct; the name "Redskins" was chosen to appeal to fans of both the Boston Braves and the Boston Red Sox.

It's also a racist slur.

Its a good idea in principle, but too many people place posts here simply because they disagree with them.

Its a hard balance what belongs here and what doesn't. I try only to put things here that are absurd, that's the most objective of the three criteria.

The latest in the venerable tradition of libertarian 13 year olds posting moronic timelines in the what-if board:

It is 2100, and another presidential election is coming up. There has been some serious tensions between Poland and Swanceany (a mixture of Switzerland, France, and Germany. Switzerland doesn't follow a non-interventionist foreign policy anymore.) Some conspiracy theorist predict a World War 3, but for now things remain slightly calm in America. China and India is getting stronger, and America and Canada are thinking of uniting into one country called The United States of Canerica, but no major move has taken place yet. The economy is mixed right now with a 7.5% unemployment. It's getting worse. After a long wait, here are the results of the 2100 presidential election:

Electoral College:

531 EVs all together

Republicans: 315 EVs

Democrats: 216 EVs

266 EVs to win

Popular Vote:

Republicans: 51% of vote

Democrats: 48% of vote

(Note: We sold Idaho to Canada to pay for a war. Oklahoma has the most electoral votes because people were rapidly moving there because of massive oil discoveries. Oklahoma is also a swing state. The area between Nevada and Massachusetts is called the Minority Belt, that is why the Democrats did so well in this area.)

How does World War 3 and the future elections look like?

You decide!

If people only posted real deluge worthy stuff the temptation to comment would be much smaller.

That's actually one of the best uses ever suggested for Idaho.
