"SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's job approval rating remains high, but his support has slipped from the lofty levels during his first year in office, according to a poll released Wednesday.

A majority of California voters also believe the state is moving in the wrong direction, according to The Field Poll.

The poll found 55 percent of registered California voters approve of Schwarzenegger's job performance and 35 percent disapprove.

In September, 65 percent of voters said they approved on how Schwarzenegger oversaw the state government, versus 22 percent who said they disapproved.

The sliding job performance rating reflects an increasingly negative view among Democrats and independents of the Republican governor. By contrast, he retains overwhelming support from Republicans, according to the poll.

The survey found Californians' view of the direction their state is heading has taken a negative turn over the past five months, with 53 percent of voters saying it is on the wrong track, compared with 35 percent who think it is moving in the right direction.

In September, 38 percent said the state was headed in the wrong direction and 46 percent said is was going in the right direction.

The Field Poll's findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,009 adult Californians, 800 of them reporting as registered voters, in English and Spanish from February 8 to February 17.

Results based on interviews with registered voters have a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points."

Does this mean he's in trouble for reelection? Probably not, but he should be worried about the slippage among Democrats and Independents.

He is still in good shape, but he also needs to work with the legislature more and not just take everything to a referendum.

Btw, the median home price across the entire state of California is now approaching $500,000 and will probably exceed that mark by midsummer. This makes a lot of people feel rich but it leaves room for the potential of a massive bust. It also makes the state a h*ll of a lot more expensive to live in.

Teachers are angry at him about the fact that he wants to ignore Prop. 98.

He has been hit hard by the teachers union, and it has taken a toll.

He needs to fight back!

What's his rating now, 55-35?  How many Governors would kill for that?  Expectations game, the dumbest thing in politics.

The corporate media has an incredibly pro-Arnold bias.
If you want to find out what he's doing wrong, you have to go to a non corporate media website like this.
http://www.arnoldwatch.org/

As for education, he promised it wouldn't be cut, and he's cut both the UC budget and grade school (ignoring the will of the people with Prop. 98 with the latter).

Since the will of the people is spend more money, balance the budget, and cut taxes, something has to give.  You can’t get something for nothing, but those who propose referenda seldom realize that.

Well, then Arnold shouldn't have promised that he wouldn't cut education spending. Arnold is a big phony.

I just saw a poll that had Arnold winning re-election in a walk. This is wishful thinking by the left.

He's going to win easily. Even my liberal friends in CA like him.

I think he'll win. The thing is with Arnie I just don't know whether he's in the game for the good of California or for the adulation

As Republicans go, he's pretty moderate

He's not a moderate. Just because he doesn't want to ban abortions does not mean that he's a moderate. He pretends to be all pro-education and evironment, but then he goes and does massive education cuts and ignores the environment.
