$70 is 6000 Kenyan shillings.  For the year, it adds up to nearly the per capita GDP of Kenya.  If the kids were really getting that much, they'd be able to live a relatively decent life there.

As his plane landed in Nairobi, a small tear trickled down Bushie's eye. Finally he could live his dream, to take care of his new children. God had rewarded him for his faith with a change in Kenyan policy regarding adoption; a single man could live with them, under the condition that he live with them in the bush for one year.

Taking a Jeep, he drove away from the capital for several hours until he reached the central village of the Baraka tribe. As his engine revved in the center of the village, several members of the tribe, including his two new children, came out to greet them.

"Would you like to buy some insurance?", Bushie asked.

The tribe stared at him puzzlingly. Suddenly, Bushie heard the beating of drums. From his rudimentary knowledge of the Baraka tribe, it meant that it was time for the hunt. Bushie took an extra spear and followed the men of the tribe onto the path through the grasses. While the strong, experienced hunters quickly noticed signs of a herd of antelope up ahead, Bushie lagged behind, huffing and puffing after the first two minutes of walking. But from somewhere in the bushes to his left, he heard what sounded like the squeals of a small animal. Bushie, despite his exhaustion, walked off the path to see what it was. Brushing away the leaves with his spear, he came across the animal; a single lion cub. It appeared to be distressed.

"There, there", cooed Bushie, picking up and stroking the cub. "Calm down, there's no need to be scared." But the lion cub only became more frightened, and its calls loudened. Bushie continued petting the cub, hoping it would calm down. Suddenly, the cub turned its head and jumped out of Bushie's arms. Bushie looked over his shoulder, and in a flash, he was bowled over by a lioness. Despite his struggles, the mother easily pinned him down, and clamped her jaws down on his throat. But this first bite only stabbed into some neck fat. The second bite directly severed the windpipe, and the lioness held until Bushie's struggles ended. She roared, signaling to the rest of her pride that prey had been killed.

The pride would eat well tonight.

A lot of these operations spend some of the child sponsorship funds on programs for the wider community. That's probably the case here.

But yeah, it sounds bad if the kids don't have shoes after bushie has been sending them $70 a month for almost a year now.

Maybe they've just worn through their last pair.  Who knows how long Kenyan shoes last!

Not long, with all that marathon running and such.

Bushie will likely defriend me eventually for my rants, but it's insane that he thinks the average Kenyan life is better than the average American life because we have more stress and technology, and they can lean on Jesus more. It's also our country's fault he's obese, because they have vegetables over there!

Well you have been forceful yet semi-diplomatic so it would be wrong to defriend you.

I'm not defriending you, Duke, and you are taking what I said and twisting them.  I'm not a very good communicator, so I'll give you a pass.  I agree with everything you and Jared are talking about.  Jared is right, my ultimate calling is to spread the gospel.  The others despite saying they are the reasons are just observations.

If anybody wants to live Kenya style, without the trouble of crossing the Atlantic, I invite you to visit the Mississippi Delta. Mostly extremely poor black people. There are still a few isolated people without electricity or indoor plumbing. Birthplace of Blues music, if ypu're into that. Tunica County also has several large casino/hotels, so one could visit without having to live the life fully. It's the largest casino location in the US after Vegas and Atlantic City. It's a funny combination out there in the cotton fields.

With casino tourism and all that poverty, is there any prostitution, memphis?

No legal prostitutes, but I'm sure there's all sorts of trouble to be had if one looks hard enough.

Hey, folks.  I am the kids only sponsor.  Each child has one sponsor.  The money goes to pay for education, meals for a month, school supplies, school fees, and basic healthcare.  For only $35 a month per child, from American eyes that wouldn't cover meals for 3 days let alone 30.

You don't have an income.  So in reality, your parents are the kids' only sponsor.

Guys it's becoming pretty obvious that this whole orphanage deal is just a scam to get money from religious, naive, and aimless white people. They let Bushie come visit every two years or so, let him fulfill his daddy fantasies for a few weeks (while having him do unpaid labor), and then suck him dry with $70 a month until his next visit, all the while promising that he'll be able to move there full time "when the orphanage is ready", which will obviously be never. Meanwhile, I'm sure most of the money goes to the people in charge, who live in luxury while his "children" don't have shoes.

this sounds correct.

I mean, doesn't it seem like they always tell Bushie, a new, later date, of when he'll be able to move there? Especially if he's sending them each $35 a month, they would certainly have shoes if the money was getting to them, not to mention a good deal of other things, we're talking about U.S. dollars in Kenya here. I used to sponsor a kid in Peru, and I sent them about $30 a month+ an annual $50 Christmas gift, and he wrote me about not only shoes, but also toys and all kinds of other neat stuff he bought with the money. My parents financed this, but I was 10.

This is the orphanage, isn't it?

http://www.maishainternational.org

Has anyone done any internet detective work on them?

Google provides no relevant results for "maisha international scam", so at least that's something.

Overseas charities are hard to pin down as frauds.

It's not as obvious as pyramid scheme vacuums.  Now, if they offer to Bushie that he will be able to help these children for just $20 a month if he can find another person to be willing to sponsor two other children for $20 a month... well then.

I even went to a few charity rating websites. Nobody has heard of them. They don't have a Wikipedia entry either. They must be a very small organization.

Quite true for right now.  I was thinking earlier this week that I need to get at least a part time evening job while I'm going to school so I can, at the very least, take full control of their sponsoring.  I wrote them a letter last night promising to be a better "father".  One of the ways is to get a job myself so I can support them.  My grandmother gives me the $70 a month to take care of them.

So your grandmother is their true "mother"?  Meaning that your "son" and "daughter" are actually your "uncle" and "aunt"?

1. I've been telling you from the beginning to get a part time job while going to school.  (Although it wasn't for that reason.)
2. I thought you weren't referring to yourself as "father" to the kids.  Did you say "sponsor father" or just "father"?
2a. Do they actually know that it's not YOU that's sponsoring them, since you don't have any money?

Oh come on, Inks. Of course he hasn't explained to them that he has no money and no job, not that they would understand at their age what that means anyway, but still, he's living out his parenting fantasy, so I think it's best we leave him alone until he comes back to Oklahoma.

Once again, his parents, or grandparents this time, are funding one of his fantasies. Nothing to see here.
