What if some Daesh-type group nuked Mecca to "purify" it of the "Westernized" Saudi Monarchy's taint?  Of course, how would the world react if this happened?

The world would be a tad confused. Doesn't really line up with believing the kaaba to be sacred. Maybe people would pay more attention to those conspiracy theories that claim ISIS is a proxy for Western intelligence agencies.

Edit:
Though that wouldn't make any sense, given that Saudi Arabia is a key American ally. Maybe the consensus would just be that ISIS went off the deep in? This is a trippy one.

Probably the closest parallel. Religious fundamentalists took over for two weeks. And Iran was having its revolution, so Khomeini took the opportunity to blame the US. Many riots in Muslim countries against the US.

Certainly useful context, but seizure and destruction are very different.

Yeah, the closest thing that happened to a Daesh type of group destroying Makkah had happened before when the Qarmatians, a radical Shia group from the Bah'rain region, sacked Makkah during the weakening of the Abbasids.

Was that more ideologically/religiously motivated or was it just motivated by a desire to plunder? Wikipedia is kind of unclear on this point, and I think if it was the latter it wouldn't be that close of a parallel -- there's no earthly advantage that could be gained by any group today by destroying Mecca, so the motive would have to be ideological or spiritual.

Sorry, just very fascinated by medieval Islamic history.
