I see a definite trend...although whether the election result will do the same is o/c up in the air.
After all, just because those deciding two weeks before the election break heavily towards Kaine doesn't mean those who decide three days before the election may not break heavily for Kilgore. (There are similar strange patterns in the 2000 presidentials IIRC)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch poll that has just come out today shows Kaine and Kilgore in a dead-heat with a slight lean towards Kaine:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Latest poll tips toward Kaine
With race too close to call, he, Kilgore focuses on mobilizing voters

BY JEFF E. SCHAPIRO
TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER

Nov 4, 2005

The Virginia governor's race is heading toward a photo finish.

Democrat Timothy M. Kaine has inched to a 1 percentage point lead over Republican Jerry W. Kilgore in the latest Times-Dispatch Poll, which showed Kilgore up by 2 percentage points two weeks ago.

Kaine is pulling 45 percent; Kilgore, 44 percent. Independent H. Russell Potts Jr. has faded to 4 percent. Seven percent are undecided.

The Kaine-Kilgore contest can be viewed as a statistical dead heat because Kaine's edge is within the poll's margin of error, 4 percentage points in either direction.

The newspaper's fourth and final survey of the hard-fought, neck-and-neck campaign provides few clues to its outcome. One potentially telling finding: Independent voters are breaking solidly to Kaine.

Also, the Richmond area home to both major candidates could prove decisive. Kilgore, who moved to Henrico from his native Southwest Virginia, is barely ahead here, leading Kaine, a former Richmond mayor, by 2 percentage points.

With no clear leader, the election could come down to voter mobilization -- in campaign parlance, "callin' and haulin.'"

Now that Kaine has a consistent small ege over Kilgore (4% average on www.realcleapolitics.com), I only hope Democrats don't get too complacent

Kaine deserves to win to continue Warner's stellar job as governor and also because he has fought a largely positive campaign, which is more than I can say for Kilgore

Kaine 49% Kilgore 46%

November 4, 2005--Heading into the final weekend of Election 2005, Democrat Tim Kaine has a narrow lead over Republican Jerry Kilgore in the race to be Virginia's next Governor.

The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll shows Kaine with 49% of the vote while Kilgore attracts 46%. This is the first time all year that either candidate has reached 49% in a Rasmussen Reports poll.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted November 2. The survey's margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points, with a 95% level of confidence. Demographic Details are available for Premium Members.

State Senator Russell Potts, a Republican running as an independent, currently earns just 2% of the statewide vote.

Last week, Kaine was ahead by just two percentage points, 46% to 44%. The candidates have been within three points of each other in six consecutive polls conducted since Labor Day.

This is the fourth straight 2005 Virginia election poll with "leaners" included in the totals. Leaners are those who initially do not express a preference for either major party candidate but lean one way or the other when asked a follow-up question.

Without leaners, Tim Kaine has a one-point edge, 46% to 45%, over Jerry Kilgore.

I was really hoping Kaine would be up by 3-4% in the MD poll.

Bush Will Campaign For Kilgore

Republican candidate for governor Jerry Kilgore plans to announce later today that President Bush will campaign with him in Virginia on Monday night.
….
Two GOP sources confirmed that Bush plans to join Kilgore for their first public campaign appearance together in Richmond. The sources did not want to be identified because the formal announcement was expected to come from the White House first.

43% or so.  He's not there to campaign in NOVA though.  He'll probably spend most of his time Richmond and SW VA.  He'll rally the base and help to get voters to the polls.  Hopefully he drives the undecideds to Kaine.  Smiley

Kaine fined for deceptive mail

Besides the GOP elephant logo, the cover of Kaine's mailing last month bore the words "For Virginia Republicans." Inside, it repeated a conservative, anti-tax group's attack on Jerry Kilgore for failing to sign its no-tax-increase pledge or back its tax-slashing agenda.

The Republican Governors Association, on Kilgore's behalf, persuaded the State Board of Elections to fine Kaine $100 for "dishonest and deceptive campaign tactics."
.........
Also Friday, Virginia Democratic Party spokesman Mark Bergman said the party filed an emergency complaint against Kilgore for a mailing that carried the Democratic donkey logo.

Inside, the brochure compared Kaine with independent candidate Russ Potts, who was rated as preferable to liberals or progressives on support for gun control, gay marriage and the right of same-sex couples to adopt.
.........
Kilgore spokesman Tim Murtaugh defended the Republican's mailing as "a legitimate service to the voters to help Tim Kaine spread his message across Virginia."

I don't know if it's me, but does anyone notice how this race is kind of like the 2000 election.  Popular incumbent who can't run for reelection, the incumbent is moderate, however, Lt. (governor or President) seems to be having a hard time.  For most of the campaign, the VP or LG has been down, but by the end it is getting close.  There's also a fairly strong third party.  Anybody?

What a suprise... The Washington Post endorses Tim Kaine.  "Not a hard call."

Whatever their party affiliation, Virginians of the political center should bear in mind that Mr. Kaine offers a path forward, while Mr. Kilgore represents a return to the past.

...
Lest we forget, Virginia's past is not a very appealing prospect. Mr. Warner's immediate predecessor, Gov. James S. Gilmore III, wedded to his anti-tax slogans, made irresponsible promises, starved the state of revenue and left a fiscal disaster zone. Mr. Warner, a businessman elected on the strength of his credentials as a pragmatist, had to clean up the mess. That he did, helped along the way by Mr. Kaine and harassed by Mr. Kilgore. And now comes Mr. Kilgore, in a sunnier economic season, preaching the Gilmore gospel that Virginians can have it all. It's a pipe dream.

...
This race isn't a hard call. Mr. Kilgore is a pleasant fellow, down to earth and politically shrewd. But the bottom line is what he represents: old-style, doctrinaire, unimaginative, cramped governance that would leave the state stalled in neutral, at best. Mr. Kaine -- forthright, proactive, inclusive, brimming with energy -- is a far better candidate possessed of much clearer vision. He alone has the potential for excellence.
