This question is inspired by debates about whether Obama is a centrist: On what topics is he more conservative than President Bill Clinton?

Obama made a *huge* issue over Hillary's support for the individual mandate in the primaries. I believe Bill Clinton supported this mandate at a time when Obama used it against Hillary. Of course, he's since changed.

But that's all I can think of.

Foreign policy, our country has never been further right since Dubya, and Obama is just Dubya's policies made smarter and with more panache.

This is ridiculous nonsense. The Iran and Cuba rapprochements make this clear. All because someone isn't some True Leftist "anti-Imperialist" doesn't mean they are "rightist since Dubya".

Obama seems to be more pro offshore oil drilling. He has done more to actually undermine privacy with the NSA, although that could just be that the NSA had 16 more years of technology to violate the 4th amendment with. Clinton didn't pursue idiotic policies that led to ISIS.

But on most issues, Clinton has been even worse.

It's an inherently right-wing hypocrisy to support legislation that erodes the privacy of citizens on one hand and then demand the right to  secrecy for your administration.

So, the main argument is that Obama's worse/ more conservative on civil liberties.

Is this due to a difference in Presidents, or is it inevitable for a Post-September 11 President? If Bill Clinton were elected President in 2008, would he have done this differently?

As for civil liberties: all the patriot acts in the world couldn't top the horrid populism of clinton's Crime Bill.

You guys are all forgetting gun control. Bill Clinton supported and signed the assault weapons ban and pushed through gun control during his term. Clinton's gun control measures after Columbine were also more extensive than Obama's moderate hero proposals.

Although gun control was much more popular in the 1990's then now. Even Bush in 2004 supported extending the ban for another 10 years. For some reason gun control support has been eroding like opposition to gay marriage is.

I think we have different definitions of "inherent".

I think Obama doesn't want to go too strong on race relations, because then he would be feeding into the stereotype of the "angry black man." Which would make Fox News swoon, but Obama wouldn't want to feed that stereotype.

Obama like Clinton had 2 years of Dem control of Congress, and instead went to Health Care, like Clinton did. He didnt try to raise taxes on wealthy and left the state status of DC in limbo in Congress.

He could have done more to pass tax fairness during that time, and on taxes, Clinton lowered capital gains.  Clinton, like Obama, on taxes are similar.

If we're talking about "conservative" in the same sense that people use it in contemporary American politics, then it's absolutely ing ridiculous to assert that racism/a lack of support for racial equality is the de facto "conservative" position on the issue, and you know it.

Obama is a much better exemplar of traditional family values.

Surgeon General:  compare outspoken abortion rights and sex ed activist Jocelyn Elders to Regina Benjamin who was honored by Pope Benedict.

Sotomayor and Kagan I think are both more philosophically moderate than Ginsburg, even if they often end up in the same place.

Clinton raised taxes more than Obama did right?
