What Presidential primary has had the most really good candidates?

I think the Democrats in 1968, especially before RFK was shot. The republicans in 1996 were pretty pathetic, none of the declared candidates could even have done significantly better than Dole.

1972 had a range of good candidates (McGovern, Muskie, Humphrey)... unfortunately the one chosen, McGovern, was a victim of rightwing media...

Any man who's name ends in 'Bush' is a commendable candidate to me.

In my memory the 1988 campaign had the deepest field, especially counting both parties.

Republican: VP Bush, Sen Bob Dole, Gov Pete DuPont, Sec of State Alexander Haig, Rep Jack Kemp, and Rev Pat Robertson.

Democrat: Gov Bruce Babbitt, Sen Joe Biden, Gov Mike Dukakis, Rep Dick Gephardt, Sen Al Gore, Sen Gary Hart, Rev Jesse Jackson, Sen Paul Simon.

I count a sitting VP, 3 with gubernatorial experience, 5 current or former Senators, 2 US Reps, a former General and Secretary of State, and two Reverends. That's a hard list to beat.

And it ended up with two relatively pathetic or mediocre results.

Just goes to show competitive primary != good candidate.
