The Senate is clearly not in order... a mockery of Parliamentary procedure.

It was a mockery of parliamentary procedure for Dewhurst to rule that it was a violation by Davis to get her back brace adjusted and for mentioning sonograms while talking about a bill dealing with abortions.

The former is likely a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Some reports say the GOP forced a post-midnight vote and passed the bill. The disaster continues.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that's illegal.

I'm not quite sure what's going on right now, but the crowd just cheered.  I guess the bill is dead for this session?

I dearly wish Molly Ivins was still alive.  I would have LOVED to read what she would have written about this.

Well passing it past midnight makes things interesting (and it's pretty clear to everyone with a working clock that it happened after midnight).  On the one hand, courts generally stay out of parliamentary issues, but on the other hand, if the vote happened after midnight, that goes beyond parliamentary procedure and violates Governor Perry's call of the special session.

That brings up another question; who has standing to sue based on that?  Perry or anybody?  I'm honestly not sure such a topic has ever come up before... it's quite an interesting little legal problem.

And the Texas Republicans really screwed up here... if you're going to pass a bill, pass it legitimately.  Don't ram it through PAST the last minute... that's just a mockery of the system.

Sounds like a good law review topic.  Too bad I'm not in Texas. Tongue

I've been at the capital since eleven. Still no resolution. Wendy Davis just came out and made some brief remarks

Sounds like they broke a bunch of rules to pass this. This again in Texas the good ol' boys network doesn't have to worry about rules.

I'm hearing that the legislature's website has retroactively changed the date for the vote from 6/26 to 6/25. Because, you know, it's not like folks know good and well how to take screenshots or anything.

I can't wait for the ensuing legal battle. It will be a spectacle for anyone interested in how parliamentary procedure can affect legality.

The episode of The Newsroom about this will either be brilliant or insufferable. Probably the latter.

Sounds like another 5-4 ruling by Mr "Judicial restraint" that fraud is OK if it helps Republicans.

Maybe they would've let her keep filibustering if she brought up Benghazi.

SB5 is dead!  Way to go Wendy and way to go Texas!

Regardless of your feelings on the bill, I think we should all be glad the mockery of rules and parliamentary procedures didn't fly.
