Let's say that Benghazi happens as it did IRL, but instead of the real-life response, Obama makes a more Machiavellian play:

1) Immediately declare the act a terrorist act.
2) Strongly emphasize the Al Qaeda ties.
3) Start bombing stuff in a highly publicized manner

How would this play have affected the 2012 election? It would have taken away Romney's entire narrative of Obama's response being weak.

There was no narrative that Obama was weak. Large majorities approved of Obama's handling of Foreign Policy and still did after Benghazi.

The GOP would have still found reasons to bitch and investigate. And there still would have been legitimate things to assess.

Pretty much everything said in here. Or the Republicans would find a way to complain that Obama "overcompensated" for being weak on National Defense and acted inappropriately. Basically, anyone who wins reelection since Nixon can pretty much expect the MSM to turn on them in six months. With Bush, it was the Schiavo thing, the Katrina thing and then the Scooter thing and the Social Security thing being unpopular.
