Reagan saying openly racist stuff wouldn't have hurt him.  Heck, the racist stuff he said in real life was an asset to him.

What was one racist remark made by Reagan while in office or ever?
All right, it wasn't explicitly racist.  It was clearly coded.  He gave a speech where he talked about believing in "States' Rights" in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which was still notorious for having been the site where three civil rights workers were brutally murdered by the Klan.  Not to mention the story he made up about the welfare queen on the South Side of Chicago.  Right, he just happened to mention that.  He also opposed making MLK day a holiday.
So did MLK's family.

Was that because they weren't sufficiently paid off?

Reagan signed MLK Day into law. Isn't that good enough for you?

I was talking about the King heirs. They are said to be a rapacious bunch, even demanding a fee to put a statue up of their father in Washington

Ronald Reagan would absolutely destory Jesse Jackson even if he made a racial remark against him. I definately see a 10-15 point shift in most states, meaning that Reagan would easily carry many states with 60-70% of the vote. The national popular vote would be roughly 65-35 in Reagan's favor.

I think Reagan would have still won, by a epic landslide however.
