Henry Clay Campaign Schedule: January 1832


Week 1:
Speech in Ohio announcing candidacy and speaking on internal improvements
Meet with delegates from Pennsylvania seeking endorsements.
Rallies in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Week 2:
Meeting with journalists to clarify position on slavery: "Though I believe slavery is a moral evil, I am working to prevent the Union, which I love dearly, from being torn asunder in a devastating civil war while we fight for our own freedom from England. Therefore, I do not advocate the abolition of slavery until we can properly deliberate on this issue. The preservation of the union should be first and foremost."
Barnstorming in New York and New Jersey.
Meetings with political leaders in New England seeking endorsements.

Week 3:
Criticize President Randolph's handling of foreign relations, pointing out that under a Protectionist President, there would have been no war, but now that we are in one, we must properly fight one.
Speeches in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Senatorial duties, including seeking endorsements of Senate colleagues.

Week 4:
Speech to soldiers and sailors in Virginia
Rallies in North Carolina and South Carolina
Speeches in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Week 5:
Senatorial Duties.
Attend President Randolph's speech.
Speak with journalists afterward: "I agree with the President that we must all stand united in a time of war, but we must also win the peace. President Randolph has conducted our foreign policy very poorly. It is for that reason that I am advocating change."
