- California (Wine Country or San Diego)
Honestly, I think these are some of the blander parts of the state.
Anyway, here goes:
Never have set foot in: AL, AK, AR, DE, KS, LA, ME, MS, MT, NH, NM, NC, ND, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VT, WV
Plane/Train/Drive: CO, CT, GA, IN, MD, OH, WY
Visited: AZ, DC, FL, ID, IA, KY, MA, MI, MN, MO, NE, NV, NJ, NY, SD, UT, VA, WI
Lived in: CA, IL, OR, WA

San Diego, yes.

Wine Country...I dunno what you've got, but I want some if you can't see the awesomeness of Geyserville or Calistoga or Mt. St. Helena!

I guess it's just a matter of taste. I'm not a wine affecionado, and CA has prettier areas (Sierras, Desert, Big Sur, Redwoods)

Unfortunately, I don't have that much time to travel at this point in my life.  I am not saying these areas wouldn't be strikingly different, but I have been to Rocky Mountain National Park, so if I am going to go out to California, it probably wouldn't be for a Sierras or Redwoods type trip.  I'm not super set on either of those two (SD or Wine Country), though.

90% Red: Lived
70% Red: Frequented
50% Red: Been there once
30% Red: Driven through
Green: Airport layover (Boston and St. Louis)

Just for the record: my travels are enough that they could be President.

Chronologically, the tipping point is Illinois.

But going from East-West with the expected returns, the tipper is probably Nevada, but the closest is Pennsylvania since I only saw Philly and Chester Co. areas.

Two holiday trips and a conference trip increase my counties to 1830 at the end of 2017.

To follow up on my previous post, here's a map of just the counties I've been to in 2017. I visited 536 counties this year and 210 were visited for the first time.

Red and magenta are counties first visited in 2017. Blue and green are counties visited in a prior year as well as 2017. Red and blue counties were slept in overnight during 2017. Yellow is a county where I changed planes but never left the airport.

My goals in 2018 are to get to more southern counties and visit HI.

Here are the counties I visited in either 2016 or 2017. Blue is just 2016, green is just 2017, and red is both (I live in Washington County).

Next year, I plan to go to Texas and hopefully explore a bit more in Oregon and Washington.

Not at all, but AK needs a dedicated trip. There's too much else I have on my plate in 2018, so it will have to wait. I'm thinking that eventually a trip to AK will involve taking the Alaska Highway there and returning by way of the ferry to Bellingham, followed by a return drive home. All told that's probably 3-4 weeks.

90% (TN, NC, PA, NJ, DC): Lived, second home, or had family that I visited enough to virtually be home (DC was just for two summer internships)
70% (SC, FL, NY): Spent more than 1 cumulative month in the state
60% (MD, VA, GA): Multiple overnight trips (Maryland is very close to the 1 month mark and Puerto Rico also fits in this category)
50% (AL, KY, TX, CA, LA): Overnight trips (with or without other day trips)
40% (MS, DE): Intentional trips, but no overnights
30% (WV, MO, IL, MI): Pass-throughs (layovers or road trips)

Blue: Live there (Fla, DC)
Dark red: Vacation (Calif, Colo, SC, NY)
Red: Other overnight things like competitions in HS (Mo, Tenn, Va, Del) and College Dems canvassing trips during the 2016 election (Penn, NC)
Pink: Went but didnt spend the night (Ga, Md)
Yellow: Drove through it (NJ)
Green: Layover in airport (Texas)

Virginia is a special case since I worked there this semester but never spent the night.

284 electoral votes total.

Did you know that Juneau is the only state capital that you can't reach by car?

But I can by the ferry. Smiley There are a few AK boroughs (which count as counties) on the mainland which have no direct road connection to the rest of the continent.

Visit Dallas - I lived in Dallas. Granted it was when I was 3-5 years old and we moved out just before the JFK assassination. However, I spent a lot of time there in 1989-1992 working on the Superconducting Super Collider. Deep Ellum was our go to place after work back then.
