If I recall correctly, we've had announcements in 2006 and 2010 for their respective cycles.  I can't remember 1998 or 2002.  I know whoever announces this early probably don't stand a chance, but I'm curious if we will have any announcements of intentions in 2014.

Only joke candidates that get something like .05% in the New Hampshire primary.

IIRC Perry said he'd make his decision next year. I read either in Politico or NRO that Ryan will decide between WM and other things before this year's out.

Even if nobody announces that they're running in 2014, there'll surely be potential candidates who'll announce that they're *not* running.  Of course, plenty of potential candidates have already done so, but it's early enough that many people don't believe them.  At what point, for example, do people start believing Elizabeth Warren when she says that she's not running?

I expect O'Malley to announce earlier than Hillary, just so he can build up his name recognition.

Some other unemployed politicians might announce early just so they can fundraise.

We'll have several governors announce they're running for re-election. Mary Landrieu will announce her re-election bid.

Announce, not anybody seriously. As for deciding, like RB is talking about, most likely those considering a campaign will have decided one way or the other before the midterms (the invisible primary has already begun, really) -- but that won't be public knowledge.

Dear God, I hope not. The full-time election cycle has an extremely damaging effect on the quality of campaign discourse. We need to do what most other democracies have done, and what was basically the de facto system before 24 hour news, and institute 90 day campaign seasons, or rather, 2 90 day campaign seasons 90 days apart, for a spring primary and a fall general election.

Probably only getting clearer ideas about who is running, but no-one announces anything, apart from a couple of lower profile candidates at the end of the year.
