Al, not sure if you saw my question:  where are you getting the locations of the precincts?  I have them in meaningless number form, but no maps.  Are you basing it on 2000 Census precinct maps?

This is a good question. I can help out a bit with Bernalillo County's changes since 2000...Sandoval County, on the other hand, you're on your own with. Smiley

I can help out with San Juan County ... there's a map on their website. Not all that super-accurate though.

Funny thing is, I can't remember where I get them from; I'm pretty sure they were the 2004 precincts though. Not that that's even slightly helpful.

Which ones did you look at? Oh, and the answer is 'because most positions in NM government are filled for patronage purposes'. Tongue

Lewis, how do you use the census to find what states different groups of people were born in? Can you find how many people in a certain city were born in a certain state?

IIRC no.
It's possible to find, on a county basis and I guess also below that (cities; census tracts?):
Percentage born in same state, other state of the same region, the other three regions (NE, MW, S, W), abroad of American parents, in Puerto Rico, in US island area, foreign born naturalized, foreign born not naturalized. And there's a table somewhere breaking down foreign born by country of birth. These also exist by race and for Hispanic and Native American some more detailed categories. And there's data on where people lived 5 years before - all of this is from the 1-in-7 sample questionnaire btw, the rest of the population wasn't asked this kind of question. Here's an example table for some Washington cities
And in a special report somewhere I found born in what state by state once.
EDIT: Here it is.

I looked at, IIRC, the main state page, the SoS, and the departments of transportation and education.

That is the answer to most questions about why things in NM suck. Tongue
Well, there's some good stuff on the Legislature's website if you dig enough.
