Guv pitches Western primary

Richardson plans formal proposal by summertime

By James W. Brosnan
March 1, 2005

WASHINGTON - Gov. Bill Richardson is planning an aggressive push to persuade Western mountain states to have a presidential primary on a single day early in the nominating process in 2008.

Richardson told the Western Governors' Association today he will make a formal proposal for a Western primary sometime after most legislative sessions end in April and May and before the association's meeting in mid-June in Colorado.

The idea, he said, "is to make the West a greater player, a bigger player in the presidential process."

Richardson told The Tribune he envisions a date early in February, which would be around the time of the New Hampshire primary.

A Western primary could be a boost to Richardson if he decides to run for president, but Richardson said that's not the reason he's pushing the plan.

Isn't Arizona already like 4th? And the first state with double digit electoral votes?

Plus, if he gets this passed himself, and then aims to personally benefit from it, well, he just lost points in my book. Couldn't he get Napolitanoor somebody to do it for him?

Whether motivated by selfish concerns or not, I can't blame him.  The race is decided long before most of the West has any say in the primaries.

The potential downside is that all of the states are pushing for a very front-loaded primary season.  The result will be that only candidates with plenty of name recognition going into the primaries (Hillary), or candidates that have amassed a huge war chest before the first contest (Bush 2000), will have a ghost of a chance at getting the nomination.  The only little known type candidate that could compete in such a field would be someone like Corzine--a person of unimaginable wealth.

Yeah, I agree with all that. It's just that they're OUR primaries, they shouldn't be manipulated by potential candidates.
