1.  Sen. Robert C. Byrd:   "(I would never fight)...with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

2.  Sen. Robert C. Byrd:   ""I am a former kleagle of the Ku Klux Klan in Raleigh County and the adjoining counties of the state .... The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia .... It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state of the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibilities of rebuilding the Klan in the Realm of W. Va .... I hope that you will find it convenient to answer my letter in regards to future possibilities."

3.  Sen. Robert C. Byrd:   "There are white ns. I've seen a lot of white ns in my time. I'm going to use that word. We just need to work together to make our country a better country, and I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much..."

I believe Number 3 is from 2003, for which Byrd apologized.  When were the other two quotes said?

They weren't said. These were made up by some so-called think tank.

2001, actually.

#2 is from 1946.

I think #1 is from 1946 or 1947 when Truman was preparing to integrate the armies.

It wasn't Byrd who said it though. It was some other guy.

As much as you Republicans are complaining about Byrd, how come you don't complain about Trent "Sheets" Lott, who never did renounce his own racism?

maybe because no one really cares what he says about Strom Thurmond. Personally, I think he was right on target with his statements.

I don't know why everyone hates Bryd. Sure, he's made some racist comments. So what? He's apologized.

I find Byrd to be absolutely hilarious. Ever watch him make a speech in congress? His mumbling and drooling is quite entertaining.

Harsh, but true. The Almanac of American Politics has a high opinion of him- but then, that book is 90 percent bullsh**t.

I personally like the man, BTW.

I agree with him about the white ns.

I'm tired of seeing stupid suburban white teenagers stealing black culture and making it their own -- I'm not sure if thats what he was referring to (who the hell knows what he was talking about) but oh well.
