George Clinton's surprising election in 1804 could only be bested by the surprising outcome of the 1808 caucuses in the lead-up to the general election. Not only would his small third-party movement enthusiastically nominate him, but moderate supporters in both parties managed to secure him being the nominee of all three parties. The only real race would be for Vice President. While the "Fusion" party had nominated Clinton with Stephen Bradley, who days later published a letter affirming his switch tot he party, the Federalists would nominate John Quincy Adams for Vice President while the Republicans gave it to the incumbent, Monroe. Party die-hards on both sides of the aisle are still running as unpledged electors for their parties, though it is unlikely that they pose a significant threat to the widely popular Clinton.
