Nunavut is holding territorial elections tomorrow. The Nunavut assembly operates via a "consensus government". There are no parties, and the Premier is not directly elected, rather she (or he) is elected from within the Assembly at a later date.

Here is a map:

Assembly is increasing from 19 to 22 seats; Iqaluit is gaining a seat, and both Arviat and Igloolik were split in 2.

No elections will be held in Netsilik (Taloyoak, Kugaaruk) or Kugluktuk due to acclamations.

Premier Eva Aariak announced that she will not be seeking the Premiership, but she will be running in the new riding of Iqaluit-Tasiluk.

So an average constituency size of just under 1,400 people, then? That's got to be among the smallest legislative constituency sizes in the Americas.

Not including municipal wards, probably. The sheer size of the territory warrants it though.

Cool! I know there is a sizable Inuit population here in Ottawa.

Would you happen to know of the ideological leanings of any of the candidates? Or are more candidates pretty non-ideological? I know Nunavumarut (sp?) usually vote for the person rather than the party.

most Nunavummiut are liberal leaning and second choice NDP and very weak Conservative

former liberals: Jack Anawak (Iqaluit-Niaqunnguut "Metro Iqaluit"), Paul Okalik (Iqaluit-Sinaa, former premier)
liberal leaning - Donna Adams (Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet, her dad is former liberal Senate Willie Adams), Eva Aariak is too close to Liberal-Independent
conservative leaning - Tagak Curley (not seeking re-elect) would be favour conservative because he opposed gay marriage.

NDP leaning - George Hickes (Iqaluit-Tasiluk, his cousin Hunter Tootoo), two of Kusugak candidates (related to Peter Kusugak in 1988)... Hunter was endorsed Leona Aglukkaq, so between NDP-CPC

edit, im wrong, Keith Peterson is not related Dennis Patterson, because almost same surname... Sorry lol

most of them independent and hard to describe their party views.

This thread, and the googling it inspired, makes me want to visit Iqaluit. The "photos" option on Google Maps look particularly gorgeous! My less-adventurous wife is less-enthusiastic about visiting, however, so I suspect I will never end up visiting.

And yet some of them have 5-6 candidates.

Geez- and she's from Edmonton? Not much difference Wink

In high school, there was a trip to Iqaluit. Wish I had gone.

Gives you an idea of what the campaign is like... outside Iqaluit, There are no signs, no leafleting, its all very personal. It's interesting, feels very much like constituency executive elections form a southern perspective.

I'm assuming there will be live streaming as well. CBC likes to do this kind of stuff, even for the territories.

I had a friend who grew up in Iqaluit, didn't talk about politics though. Smiley

I'll be curious to see how this turns out. I find it cool that each small settlement gets one seat in assembly, on average. It'll be interesting to see if any patterns emerge. I'm guessing there's no predominantly conservative or predominantly liberal areas, because the communities are so far apart. It's truly a local issues election.

First poll in from the Kimmirut early polls station in the South Baffin riding.

AKAVAK, TOMMY has 12 votes.

IKKIDLUAK, JOANNIE has 1 vote.

JAW, MATHEW SAVEAKJUK has 1 vote.

Close three way race! Only 11 votes between them. Tongue

JOANASIE, DAVID and SCHELL, FRED don't have any yet.

Schelll is the former mayor of Cape Dorset, which would explain why he won 0 votes in the Kimmirut early poll. Just another example of how voters in Nunavut vote for the person.

No incumbent in Baker Lake, and the riding only consists of the town, so no community vs. community tribal matches like in South Baffin.
