Having watched several Virginia gubernatorial inaugurations on C-Span, I've noticed that the outgoing governor has to leave the inaugural platform once their successor is sworn into office as soon as the 19-gun salute starts.

Why not let the outgoing governor sit through the entire ceremony ?

TRADITION! Tradition.  It's a way of dramatically emphasizing the handoff, plus it probably originated when some ex-governor didn't want to sit around outside on a windy day listening to a windy speech by a successor he might not even care for.
