The main controversy of Adams' second term would be the so-called "Tariff of Abominations". A heavy protective tariff against foreign-made goods to protect domestic industry, the South was driven into paying higher prices for goods their region didn't produce. In response, South Carolina would attempt to nullify the law within the state borders, declaring it unconstitutional. Over the course of Adams' term, a sort of legislative standoff existed between Washington D.C. and South Carolina until, after radical actions by the state legislature, the federal government under Adams threatened to send federal troops into the Palmetto State. While eventually South Carolina would relent, the incident would be a stain on relations between the South and D.C. for several years hence.

With that in mind, Adams' surrogates are nevertheless pushing for a third term for the incumbent. The National Party is using the phrase coined by Senator Daniel Webster, "Liberty and Union Forever" as its slogan in the election. Despite the electoral strength of the "Old Oak", the party may be looking for a new face to replace it before Adams gets his chance at a fourth term (or third full term) as President. Vice President Henry Clay is an obvious contender, having been one of the party founders and having served as Speaker, Secretary of State, and Vice President. However, there are others, including Secretary of State Rush, former Vice President and War Secretary Harrison, and Webster himself, who have supporters that would like to see them in the White House.

The Republicans, on the other hand, having seen Van Buren go down twice, are looking for a new champion. Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina is the obvious choice, having stood with his state throughout the "Nullification Crisis". However, there are others, including the much more North-friendly Governor  Silas Wright of New York, a Van Buren ally. Lacking a bench full of heavy hitters, other contenders are Nullification supporter John Floyd of Virginia and economist Henry Lee of Massachusetts who has written on free trade and other Republican economic policies. As well, there is a bit of nostalgia present as there are still select groups of people at the convention advocating for William Clark and Andrew Jackson, both of whom seem on their way out of the national stage.

There is as well a burgeoning Anti-Masonic Party, made up of those generally supportive of National policies but opposed to the amount of influence members of the Free Masons have in both parties. Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, and William Clark are but a few of the prominent major party leaders to be associated with the secret society. Among the candidates are two one-time members of the Adams administration.

Three days.

Henry Lee. Nullification won't be a winning issue on this forum, but free trade might be.

Eh, on second thought, I'll switch my convention vote over to Lee. Take a vote from Calhoun and give it to Lee in the poll.

I'd like to see the violence that breaks out at the Republican convention over this.

I could only consider this if it were tied between Calhoun and Lee. One of Lee's votes is mine, so I can't use it to sway the tide in Lee's favor if a tie occurred, but a last-minute switch at the convention by a former Calhoun supporter could work.

This could actually be a very important inciting incident to move us towards future important plot twists that I have planned.

Calhoun/Lee vs. Clay/Webster. I can't wait to see how many people will vote for one of America's morally worst politicians simply because of his economic policies!

Well, Henry Lee was the father of Robert E. Lee, so that's a point against him Wink.

That's not the Henry Lee that's running in this race. This is the one who's running.

It was a joke.
