Union and Liberty
Victory has been won in the War of Secession, the United States has been restored. In the rebellious states, slavery is by-and-large an out of fashion practice, due to a combination of shame associated with the large landowners that led secession, as well as land being redistributed to slaves. Military victories aside, the landmark event of the past four years has been the successful passage of the 13th and 14th amendments. Spear-headed by the radical wing of the Union party, the momentous occasion of victory in the war was the perfect opportunity to introduce it to Congress. With the Southern states politically castrated and the North growing in political power, it was the time to strike. The 13th Amendment provides for the emancipation of all slaves born after 1850, and permanent abolition of the practice as of January 1st, 1870. The 14th amendment provides all free males with the same rights before the law, including voting.

Nevertheless, there is discontent, even within Van Buren's own party. Some criticize his reactions to Southern militants as weak, and thus are pushing for the nomination of Scott. Radicals fear that Van Buren lacks the political force of will to see full implementation of the 13th and 14th amendments, and thus their hero, James G. Birney, is being championed by a contingent of Union Convention delegates. Finally, conservatives, unnerved by the ambitious plans of the party in regards to slavery, want Senator John Davis of Massachusetts to lead the party.

The Republicans, now dead, have by-and-large folded into the National party. What little remains of them is pushing for the nomination of Francis Preston Blair, Jr. on the National party line. While Blair has, as a newspaper publisher, stood by the amendments, he has also championed the cause of restoring democracy to the South rather than the near state of marshal law the states are in now. More regular members of the National party being pushed for are Clay protege John J. Crittenden, 1840 Vice Presidential nominee John P. Kennedy, and Congressman Millard Fillmore of New York.

I'm sure whoever the Union picks will get a horde of voters, but I'm going with Blair too.  The nationals must remain alive.

I backed Clay last time around, but Van Buren has governed well. I'll vouch for him. I think I've changed allegiance every election since 1832.
