To paraphrase something I read elsewhere, he could have been another Mugabe but chose to be a saint instead.  Obvious FF is obvious.

The FF part was getting the whites out of power, d0.  That he didn't remove them from their position of economic power afterwards is the dubious part.

I don't understand how anyone except someone who only knows Nelson Mandela as "that nice guy from Africa who did that good thing once" could not know he was a Socialist.

Unfortunately, socialism (especially democratic socialism) tends to do badly when confined to one small country, as international investors will invariably favor states where they can extract a greater profit. Socialism, like capitalism, has to be a global system (or at least a significant portion of the globe) to succeed.

Yes, he wasn't a particularly great President, I know.

Considering that his main task was a (difficult) peaceful transition, I'd say he was a very good President.
