With the Southern states readmitted, the Nationals crushed, and Union party domination in the North and South alike, it looks like the nation may be headed the direction of the one-way party. Opposing the Unionists are only two minor parties: the "Manifest" party of Joseph Smith, which serves primarily as a vehicle for his interests, agenda, and religion, and the "Redeemers", a coalition of Southern, anti-Reconstruction politicians that managed to escape the noose and prison in the aftermath of the War of Secession. With that in mind, the primary race is within the confines of the Union Party itself. With a field of seven strong, it appears that the party's most visible personalities and leaders will have to duke it out on the convention floor.

Lincoln isn't necessarily in the Union Party at this point. A member of the Nationals who nevertheless supported the union wholeheartedly during the war and came to support the 13th and 14th Amendments, the former State Senator from Illinois is currently out of office. During Lincoln's "wilderness years" outside of public office, it would be hard to pinpoint his party loyalties, though historians believe he supported the Union Party. Nevertheless, he would write on the importance of reuniting the country, proposing a "10% Plan" for ending Reconstruction. He would find himself out of line with the Van Buren administration on a whole host of views--Reconstruction, tariffs, internal improvements, etc. Without a real party right now, Lincoln's political future looks bleak and he's taken up law again.
