This is a federal case. Doesn't this mean gay marriage has to be legalized throughout the whole country?

This is a great ruling, of course. But it's just a shame the courts don't have enough guts to overturn unconstitutional "right-to-work" laws too.

Well, "right-to-work" was not the question before the court so it's kind of weird to even bring that issue up, unless you're trying to derail the thread into another conversation entirely.

I thought this thread was about courts protecting human rights from lawmakers' whims.

Oh for f**** sake. This is happening in Utah. New Mexico, California etc... Understandable. Utah, Jesus Christ.

I'm really starting to wonder as to who governs.

In this case, the people govern.

I hate to ruin the celebration, but won't this ruling almost certainly be overturned?

Now that some folks in Utah have actually gotten married today following this ruling, it can't be.

I think this ruling may actually be a slight electoral boost to more liberal candidates (in Utah and elsewhere). It helps vindicate and encourage the liberal base. They'll fight to keep the ruling from being overturned.

The right-wingers who were angered by this ruling were already likely voters.
