Who is your hero, and indicate in the poll what category the person falls under.  If your hero is a coach of a pro or college team, vote Sports Figure instead of Teacher/Coach.

I voted none.

My Grandmother - She's been to hell and back with her family, but never would she not have time for one of us.

I don't really have a hero, but I didn't realize none was a serious option.  So out of those options, definetely the scientist who discovers something to improve humanity.

I voted other.  I admire several people, but none are really my role models.  When I was a kid my role model was socrates.  I liked the way he would keep asking people questions till they couldn't answer anymore.  I outgrew my crush on socrates when I thought more about him choosing hemlock over exile.  Nowadays I admire people who can take their families and their careers both seriously.  It's difficult.  I'm not all that good with either of them, but I do admire those who are.  I also admire the tenacious types, although I am not one of them.

The big hero for me is my dad, who has been fighting terminal cancer for the last 21/2 years. It's left him paralysed. He'd only been retired 6 months

I also respect, and admire, Jane Tomlinson, who has terminal cancer, but has devoted the last years of her life to feets of endurance raising money and Lance Armstrong

good call.  not too often in the summer of 2003 did the citizens of France line the streets waving American and Texas flags and cheer.  Anyone who could have produced that effect can and should be regarded as somewhat special.

My reasons for calling Armstrong is that he successfully battled cancer and went on to achieve sporting greatness. A spirited and inspiring story if ever there was one

I realize this.  I'm a cyclist and an American and a former student of UT Austin, so I see Lance as a sort of fellow.  And though I know nothing of cancer, I realize that he was special for reasons other than winning 6 Tours de France consecutively, and I'm sure it was the fact that he overcame potential debilitation and raised sums of money for a good cause that made the French wave those banners.  I just couldn't help swelling with pride that it was a one of my own countrymen who did this.  Sorry for the distraction.

I was torn between -
Peter Sellers:

Klaus Nomi:

but I think my final choice is - Woody Allen:

Maybe role model is a better word than hero.

opebo, I am not surprised you chose a man who's screwing his daughter as your hero.

Probably my grandmother, outside the family, Lance Armstrong is a good role model.

Professionally: Fritz Haber and Edward Teller. Scientists and patriots
Politically: no one, really. I respect Washington, though
Personally: Won't say

My father.

Good call on Sellers, though. He's definitely one of the most underrated actors ever.

Herbert Hoover. He could be reviled and hated by the entire nation, but still serve his nation and never stop loving his country and his fellow man.
