It made sense at the time. Johnson was the only loyalist from a slave state to stick with the Union and having a southerner on the ticket helped Lincoln in the border states. Hamlin, being from Maine, brought no help.

Indeed; if anything, Reconstruction wasn't harsh enough. There's a part of me that in retrospect would have wanted the earth salted for everything that happened.

HP. I'm in line with the Radical Republicans. Ideally, he would have been removed from office after impeachment. That may have done irreparable damage to the Presidency, to the ultimate future benefit of the United States.
