I would have certainly voted for McGovern.

This thread might sound a bit stupid, but I'm trying to figure out whether a 3rd party candidate realistically could ever win. (In this case, a strong 3rd party candidate faces two weak major party nominees)

McGovern.

This poll will not prove your third party theorem. A candidate's performance is narrarated by the time period in which they run. McGovern and Goldwater are both far more mainstream today than they were when they ran.

I would've voted for McGovern of course, but I agree with zachman. Furtheremore, most of the people on this board tend to be more extreme and willing to vote for more extreme candidates.

Goldwater "in your guts you know he's nuts!"

godbless the Democrat party of 1964...

In the end it would be tough but i would be attracted to vote for Perot... but McGovern (as with Goldwater) i have a lot of respect for... but in the end proably Perot...

This is a really odd one...not much of an idea, I kind of liked all of those, even though Perot was a little mad, Goldwater let down civil rights and McGovern was a typical 'losing liberal'. I might have voted for McGovern...or Goldwater...

The more I learn about Goldwater the more respect I get for him. I used to think he was just this right-wing nut, but there was obviously far more to him than meets the eye. No doubt the religious right would have horrified him.

At any rate, both McGovern and Goldwater were men of principle, a real rarity in this day and age. But McGovern just about edges it as far as this hypothetical vote is concerned...

I concur with that. The problem is, I judge politicians a great deal on their ability to rise to the problems of their own time and Goldwater failed on Civil RIghts. I know he wasn't a racist himself and so on, but he still based his electoral strategy on discontent among bigoted racists. I find that hard to forgive, otherwise I would probably vote for him.
