It turns out that not many Democrats voted for Kerry; they voted against Bush. I don't see a way why anyone voted for him. He was a terrible candidate whose whole campaign was "Bush sucks".

This was a sufficient reason to vote Kerry. The Bush presidency is a shame.

In the South the percentage was much higher for some reason in the polls.  In places like South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, about 45-60% of Kerry voters voted for Kerry.  In Northern states, I think it was about 25% or so.  Although I couldn't vote, I was strongly an anti-Bush voter in the beginning, but by the end, I became a pro-Kerry person.

Nationally, I think it was around 1/3 voting for Kerry, and the rest against Bush.

The CNN exit poll says:
Out of the 25% who voted for a candidate "against his opponent", 70% voted for Kerry.
40% of the 69% voting "for your candidate" went for Kerry.

Doing some quick rough calculations I make: it that about 30.5% voted "for Kerry" and 17.5% "against Bush". 40.71% voted "for Bush" and

For Kerry: 30.5%
Against Bush: 17.5%
For Bush 40.7%
Against Kerry: 7.5%

I think many of the people taking the poll didn't realize they were voting against Bush.
