To be honest, I'm not trolling at all.
Aliens should be have the same rights than humans, if they aren't dangerous I don't see why they couldn't have human rights.

Ehhhhh... I might actually veto this one if it passes the Althing, and not only because of how unexpected this bill is. I mean, is this even constitutional?

I honestly can't deal with this bill. It makes me laugh. But Amity is home to a mountain with numerous alien run ins reported. So it could actually apply.

Well, I like this bill. Let's be prepared to embrace our crop circle-making visitors when the time comes Wink

Certainly extraterrestrials should be granted immediate Midwestern citizenship, along with the traditional *hughughug*.

Midwest would be the first region to have this typology of law?

I think so, but I don't think we should be leading the nation on this...

Well, I honestly think that if we are going to discuss this issue (which seems unlikely, given that lack of contact with extraterrestrial life forms), we should do in the national level, I don't think it's up to the Most Serene Republic to actually legislate about aliens. That for one side, and the other one is that is bill, no matter how serious, it's unlikely to be taken seriously by the rest of the nation, even if that is a small concern.

Well, it's not like we're granting equal rights to sofas and dromedary camels.

Well, I'll offer an amendment:

Quote
Midwest Extraterrestrial Life Act:
1) Since it is likely that humanity discover Extraterrestrial Life in the 21th or 22th century, measures shall be taken to protect the rights of said life forms in the Most Serene Republic.
2) All alien sentinent life forms shall have the same rights than humans in the Most Serene Republic of the Midwest.
3) Humans, who encounter sentient aliens shall immediately contact the police in order to avoid a diplomatic incident, and possibly the invasion of Earth. Likewise, the police shall contact the Midwest Govenor to conduct negotiations.

Some extra words, a few mentions to our Most Serene Republic and a small change in language. Nothing really important, but I guess it's better to be more detailed when dealing with this.

Oups sorry. Where is the problem? If a human is dangerous, he's arrested, isn't he?

I mean if their goal as a species is to invade us. I can understand no torture, but there is no way we can possibly estimate how they will fit into our society as a species. If they think as a collective and try to invade us, why would we give them all a separate trial for example? I just think this is too speculative without possibly knowing what they are going to be like.

The biology of an alien is not the same as the biology of a human. There are just so many unknown variables here that you cannot possibly legislate this reliably when you don't know what you are even dealing with.
