Rand Paul would be a risky nominee. Gaffes would be problematic to someone who can be depicted as crazy and inexperienced. But his unconventional views can make him an inspiring figure, a contrast to the old ideas represented by Hillary Clinton.
Daniels probably isn't the best running mate for Paul, and for the same reasons he turned down a chance at the nomination in 2012, he's unlikely to be on a national ticket in 2016.
But Daniels isn't the worst fit. The combination of newcomer and old pro has resulted in elections in the past (JFK/ LBJ, W/ Cheney, Obama/ Biden). He could be an effective surrogate in the Midwest. There's a good balance of experiences. And he's seen as a serious largely inoffensive voice on national issues.
