One of the better presidents by default, but horribly overrated for a host of reasons.

I have to say, I respect his life story and him as a person. But for starting the progressive movement and all, is automatic HP right there. Carrying on the imperialist policies of McKinley only brings him lower as well.

Examples?

Really, the only reason why he was on balance a good president (and even then very overrated; Taft, for instance, busted more trusts but made less of a spectacle about it) was because he had the least eventful decade of the century during which to be in charge.

Mega FF.  America was a third-tier country on the world stage before him, and a first-tier country by the time he was done.

The trust-busting and general concern for the poor are an added bonus.  Plus he was the first to call for universal health care.

Curiously enough, he was nowhere near as bellicose as President than when he was Vice-President under William McKinley.  Or, for that matter, after his Presidency when the First World War broke out.  If anything, he was the peace-maker during his White House years, negotiating an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

Or he should have just stayed in and gotten re-elected in 1908 instead of stepping down when he did.  He obviously loved being President.

Big FF, even if he did, occasionally, go a bit off the rails when it came to expanding the role of the central government (Food and Drug Act: good, supporting higher taxes: bad)

He was no more racist than anyone else of his time, aside from Wilson and his ilk. Judging people by modern standards is terrible.

The fact that TR is going to have a lower approval % than Garfield and Arthur is a joke.

That probably was true for most pre-FDR Presidents.
