Threads related to the British election are dominating this board, so could we have a child board here? This board is not really "international", is it?

Oh, and in Britain, when does the writ get dropped before the election?

Well it is the biggest election this year so I don't see the problem.
I'll stick a thread up on the B.C election if you want

It's not U.S=International

Don't think so: what happens is the P.M asks the Queen/King (delete where applicable) to dissolve Parliament, and the P.M then announces it.
The Queen/King is not supposed to refuse. This is a Convention.

If we presume May 5th as the date of the election the writ dissolving Parliament must come by April 11th. The Government will likely go a few days before that in order for it to rush through any last minute legislation. Expect an announcement on April 6th or 7th.

I'll grant I haven't paid much attention, but what particular reasons, if any, are there for assuming that the election would be May 5?

Already mentioned are the County Council elections of the same day.

Also the Labour Party leadership had instructed the local parties to have candidates selected for a general election by early Spring. This certainly puts us in the ballpark of May as an election date.

The budget had a feel of a pre-election budget; So yet another indication of it being soon.

What makes everybody say May 5th: Well it obviously coincides with the county council elections, but also there's a tradition in recent years of first Thursday in May elections, and this would be in keeping with that.

Not really... Last three elections coincided with locals but the one before that (1992) was in April, 1987 October and 1983 (June).

Oh and I'd like a child board please.

What makes me say May 5th is that my sources tell me it is definitely going to be May 5th and should be announced shortly after Easter......
