What specifically did Coolidge do to cause the Great Depression? Following the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Hoover made matters much worse by implementing massive tax and tariff hikes, as well unprecedented public works spending and subsidization of agriculture. Hoover was probably the most economically interventionist president up to that point.
