Inspired by the thread from a few months back about the best SC justice, I'm asking now: Which one is your favorite, politically or legally speaking?

EDIT: I voted Ginsburg. Tongue

Probably Kennedy; he's the only one who is not on party lines, at least not as much as the others.

That's interesting. Thomas is least worst of the two...

Thomas.  He has a rare quality in a person in his position, a total lack of any need to speak just to make certain people know he's there.  Just imagine if posters here all shared that trait.  Then instead of posters celebrating hitting their 16180th post or the like, we'd be celebrating the Forum hitting its 31416th post.

Scalia is my favorite; ideologically, I'd probably pick Breyer.  Voted Scalia.

Right now Ginsburg, but I'd have voted Stevens when he still was in the court.

I'm a particular fan of Justices Ginsburg and Sotomayor. Justice Sotomayor has far exceeded my expectations and I expect her to be the intellectual heavyweight for the Court's liberal wing when Ginsburg leaves. It was close for me, but I went with Sotomayor.

I do have a lot of admiration for Justice Scalia's intellect (and I do occasionally agree with him), but I find some of his personal views on some issues (such as gay rights) to be particularly abhorrent.

To the above posts, I'm not surprised to see some votes for Chief Justice Roberts. He is almost frighteningly charming, not to mention his incredible mind.

Sotomayor. I especially respect her decision on the mandated contraception issue, seeing as how she is left-leaning.

I find Scalia the most entertaining and dislike Thomas the most, but as for my favorite...I can't say I have one.

Ginsburg and Sotomayor, and I respect Roberts and Kennedy too. The rest I feel so-so on or dislike.

Voted Ginsburg.

Sotomayor should be Chief Justice.

I guess consider Roberts to be my favorite, but I also find Kagan to be interesting.

What you all's opinion on Alito?

Really? I've heard that sort of talked about re: Kagan.

LOL, he voted to appoint Bush President.

Philosophy is probably closest to Sotomayor or Ginsburg (voted the latter) - I so wish there had been for all these years a 5-4 lib majority with her as chief justice. Smiley

Kennedy is still I think the least conservative of the five, although on corporate power and police power he always sides with the right. I think changing times make him look less moderate and more conservative, though.

Alito? God-awful. Ugh.

Kagan voted against the Medicaid expansion, in one of the most legally absurd decisions of recent years. She's a disgrace and Obama made a huge mistake appointing her.

Roberts. He strikes me as far more willing to decide cases on their merits rather than whatever outcome he wants to see than anyone else on the bench.

Sure, it's just a coincidence that he gutted the VRA that he worked to try to defeat in 1982 in the pro-apartheid Reagan administration.
