John Thune came to mind. T-Paw certainly was the most vetted candidate, versus Sarah the Clueless. My choice would have been Crist or Lieberman, after pledging a 1 term limit as a "unity" pledge, the problem would be the base's turnout. Only problem with Condi is that she was to closely associated to the Bush Administration, which by the Veepstakes, McCain had already tried to run from.
The base liked her more than Powell. I think she could have been successful enough in speaking that she could have boosted Bush's approvals by 2-3, and McCain would make gains in Indiana and the AA vote in NC & VA. The sheer contrast between her and BIDEN at the debate would be great.
