I have zero interest in states rights. In a perfect world, the states would be dissolved perhaps, and we would just have the feds and local governments.

In any event, my point of view is that you use the states to experiment, find what works and doesn't and nationalize what works with federal legislation, superseding state experiments gone bad, and then over time, as things ossify, you start going local again with experiments and repeat the cycle. It is a paradigm of continual centralization and then decentralization, and back again, almost like a beating heart. Without a beating heart, you tend to have a rather sluggish corpus.  Corporations do the same thing, for the same reason.
