John Edwards Scandal if Kerry had won in '04

What would 2008 have looked like if the John Edwards scandal had broke when it did, in 2008? How badly would it have damaged Kerry's re-election chances if at all? Would Kerry have picked a new VP candidate in '08?

It would probably be butterflied away, though considering the guy's interactions IRL, he may do it with another woman.

His cheating on his stricken wife didn't start, IIRC, until well after the 2004 campaign ended. According to the accounts of multiple former friends in Game Change, neither did his turning into an all-around egocentric jerk start until then. Had he won, yes it's possible he could've gone off and been a horn dog with some other woman (he likely wouldn't have otherwise come into contact with that indie cinematographer as Veep), but it's entirely likely the extra scrutiny of being Veep (and the heir-apparent) would've kept him from pulling a Lewinsky scandal in office.

I will say that one of the few unexpected upsides of Kerry losing is that it spared us having John Edwards become the face of the Democratic Party at some point.
