Gallup (if you trust them) has confirmed what we've all been saying about the Democrats' problems with senior voters.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/168083/seniors-realigned-republican-party.aspx

The Democratic party actually had an advantage with those +65 until 2006 but plummeted shortly after and dropped into negative territory by 2010. The drop roughly coincides with Obama's presidency, with Gallup noting that race is a factor for this group of voters.

Honestly, I'm surprised that senior citizens were so Dem up until 2006

US seniors are disproportionately white and don't like the blacks. What a surprise... The sooner they croak, the better for the country.

Now you can be banned, I hope.

So it's okay for people to wish for the death of people b/c of gay rights but not for civil rights?

It could also do with the WWII generation beginning to die off, and the Baby Boomer generation becoming 65+ (and outnumbering the remainder of the older generation).

Most seniors are too young to remember the Great Depression. Also, a lot of them are dumbs who want the government out of their JohnsonCare.

The obvious reason here are that the seniors that remember the Depression/New Deal are dying off and the people after that tend to be conservative.

The question is how long they are going to stay with the Republicans. Most of the successful Republican coalitions the last elections (both Midterms and Presidential) were built around huge margins of white voters without college degrees. These voters pulled the lever for Nixon, Reagan, Bush the Elder and his son. The GOP never managed to seal the deal with them, and so they bolted to Clinton and Carter. A lot of them voted for Obama as well.

If the Republicans start to get serious about entitlement reform, they will have to do something about Medicare as well. Such a reform might alienate a lot of their voters in the +65 group. That might give the Democrats some leeway there.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. As a born-again Christian, I believe that everyone should be treated with respect and kindness, but on the grounds of my faith I disagree with the legalization of gay marriage. Does that sound like hatred to you? You would actually wish for my death just because I disagree with your views about a life issue?

Of course no sane person wishes for your death. But what does legalizing gay marriage have anything to do with your faith? You can believe what you want and still let others have the same rights. I don't know why that's so hard for evangelicals to understand.

Personally I don't think you're treating people with respect and kindness when you don't think their loving, committed relationship deserves the same recognition just because they're of the same gender, but whatever.

This, "I'm just a loving Christian who hates the sin, not the sinner" schtick is getting old.

Yes, I live in Georgia so I hear this a lot. There are plenty of people in my life who I would go to the moon and back for who think this way, and I know they're good people. But sometimes you need to know where the line is between following your own religious beliefs and using those beliefs to discriminate.

But yeah, this conversation probably needs to go on another thread

Isn't that a simple side effect of older voters "leaving" the electorate (i.e. dieing). Up until recently you had senior citizen cohort groups that still remembered the Great Depression and FDR which might have made them more likely to be lifelong Democrats.

The House is different when it comes to seniors than the Senate. Much of the GOP districts in the House are made of middle class upper income voters. When it comes to Medicare, I think it is safe to say, with the Ryan budget and no more slide from Obama in his approvals, we aren't gonna lose ground in the House and have an even or Democratic controlled Senate. Ryan wants to privatize Medicare again.

I too am a firm born-again believer with a personal relationship with Christ. However, I respectfully disagree with you on legalizing gay marriage.

In short, There is a difference between civil marriage (recognized legally by the state), and Holy matrimony (God and the church). To me, I don't think anyone on the pro-side is trying to force churches to allow it. That's why it's a legal issue entirely.

I would also like to add that divorce is what's destroying the sanctity of marriage, not homosexuality.

How does one have a "personal relationship with Christ"?

It appears most of the shift was actually from 1993 to 2003.

65+ crowd was born from 1949 and before.

Those born in the late-1940s were part of the Republican realigning presidential election of 1968 and the rebranding of the party that took hold in the 1980s under Ronald Reagan and George Bush.

None of this is revelatory.
