Open discussion.

Example:  Someone like Russ Feingold or someone like Mark Warner?

Hopefully less liberal, but given the party's current views, I wouldn't be suprised at a nominee as liberal as Kerry.

More Liberal... The Democrats coming off of major gains in the 2006 mid-terms will think the nation is ready for a real liberal... But this person will get crushed by a moderate Republican (Giuliani, Romney or Rice)

I highly doubt that, but I wouldn't have a problem with Kerry getting the nomination again. He does have an edge over other canidates, the edge being money!

As for canidates, I think they will be (from most likely to least likely)

1. Hillary Clinton
2. Russ Feingold
3. Evan Bayh
4. John Kerry
5. John Edwards

Considering that 2004 was an open field with candidates ranging from uber-liberal (Kucinich) to DINO (Lieberman), and 2008 will probably be the same, it really could be anyone.

As liberal, because I think Kerry will be our nominee in 2008.

I was a Kerry supporter in the primaries in 2004. The month before Iowa when everyone was all hot for Dean, I spent many nights making calls for support for Kerry. I was sometimes the only volunteer in local Kerry HQ. I was a big supporter, not just a default voter.

That said: Kerry screwed up his own election. He hit Bush hard enough, but gave very little reason to vote for him other than he wasn't Bush. He ignored Swift Boat vet attacks at his peril, he avoided populist rhetoric, he talked about "plans" but lacked vision. I'd vote for Joe Lieberman before I'd vote Kerry again, and Lieberman sucks.

I think the Dem nominee will be about as liberal as Kerry, but will probably sound more populist.

What's so great is that he looks as if he's checking to see if his fly is closed.

Yep, still closed, time to finish my speech.

Umm...doesn't that look like a rally for Clinton's reelection in 1996?

Oh, and I think Democrats are most likely to go for Evan Bayh. Feingold might come off like Howard Dean.

A 'moderate' Republican cannot get past the religious who control the primary process.

I think, and hope, that the Democrat in 2008 will be more liberal, as Kerry was scarcely liberal at all.

I agree, though given his age Edwards is more hopeful than Kerry. The trend hasn't been to give losers a second chance for the last two decades, so Kerry's renomination is doubtful. At this stage, I support Feingold.

If the Dems want to commit electoral suicide again, then fine, let them nominate somebody more or as liberal as John Kerry.  Liberals have to realize that even the word 'liberal' is an ugly insult these days, and you can thank the 1988 slug-fest for that.
