I used to think Kentucky was worse (i.e., more conservative), especially in the days of Jim Bunning, Ernie Fletcher, and their madcap crew. But with the disastrous results in West Virginia in 2012, I have doubts about this now. Kentucky at least has Louisville and the like.

So which state is more socially conservative?

Probably West Virginia. I think they are about the same and that all the rural areas that border the two states are very similar. (rural areas in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Virginia). Isn't there literature about this?

Most Likely Kentucky, but I have no idea how to prove it. West Virginia just had a lot of Obama backlash, not necessarily socially conservative.

Kentucky has two sort of big cities, WV has none.

I don't think the difference (if there is any) is statistically significant.

Well, WV doesn't have the death penalty or a constitutional ban of gay marriage. It has less restrictive abortion laws than Massachusetts.

At the time West Virginia abolished the death penalty, it was probably the more socially liberal state. I'd say maybe it's the more conservative state now because the liberal base has moved to the cities.
